The toniest retail locations in the world aren’t just expensive for shoppers — stores pay hundreds or even thousands of dollars per square foot in rent to be in some of the most-visited and priciest shopping spots in the country. As the saying goes: location, location, location.

Commercial real estate services firm Cushman & Wakefield has compiled the list of the U.S. streets that command the highest per-square-foot rent. As you might expect, major cities like New York and Chicago are well-represented in the rankings, but the shopping districts of some smaller cities are also quite pricey — and Washington, D.C. ties New York with four spots in the top 20.
