It may feel early to be planning spring break trips before you’ve even finished your Christmas shopping, but data from Tripping.com shows that families are already beginning to book their spring trips. The busiest time for booking spring break travel is in early February, but booking now will give you far more selection, especially if you’re planning on visiting a popular spring break destination.

It’s a great time to travel in general, since airfares remain low compared to their historical averages. As always, the more flexible you are, the sweeter the deal you can get on travel. It’s usually cheaper to travel between Monday through Wednesday, rather than Thursday through Saturday. You’ll also likely find better fairs in the early morning and on red-eye flights. Booking your flights and hotel together can also shave hundreds off the price of a trip.

Road trips remain a good deal as well. While gas prices are projected to increase slightly next year, if they average $2.70 per gallon, as expected by the U.S. Energy Information Administration, they’ll still be relatively cheap.
