The number of uninsured people in the United States rose by nearly 700,000 to 27.4 million in 2017, the first increase since 2010, according to an analysis by the Kaiser Family Foundation.

The uninsured rate was largely unchanged in states that expanded Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act, but it rose by 0.6 percentage points in non-expansion states.

“Ongoing efforts to alter the ACA or to make receipt of Medicaid contingent on work may further erode coverage gains seen under the ACA,” the foundation says.
