Sweet-tooths beware, Illinois slaps an extra 5 percent surcharge on candy to its 1.25 percent sales tax. Though there are exceptions for candy that contains flour, like Whoppers, and Kit-Kat bars, so Illinoisans trying to dodge these (not-so) sweet taxes should be sure to check the label. Many states also impose soda taxes, but some are tricky -- if you’re in Chicago, fountain soda is taxed 9 percent, while the same soda from a bottle or can is taxed at just 3 percent.
