Lorene Rogers
A biochemist, Rogers became interim president of the University of Texas, Austin, in 1974 and was named president in 1975, becoming the first woman to lead a major research university in the country. Hanna Holborn Gray, who was appointed provost at Yale University in 1974 and became acting president there in 1977, would go one to become president of the University of Chicago in 1978, making her the first woman president of a major private unviersity.
