United, Continental, and Alaska Airlines have replaced the thousands of pages of flight manuals pilots must carry with iPads, saving thousands of gallons of jet fuel and the cost of millions of pieces of paper. The flight bags pilots carry can weigh as much 38 pounds if navigational charts are included; the airlines say replacing them with 1.5-pound iPads also reduces back problems and other injuries.
