SuperValu, which uses 1.5 billion bags a year at its grocery stores, is retraining its cashiers and baggers to eliminate double-bagging, put more items in each bag and eliminate bags entirely for gallon jugs of milk and other things with handles. Customers get plastic bags, unless they specifically ask for paper – which costs more than twice as much, and are encouraged to bring reusable bags. Estimated savings: $4 million-$6 million a year.
